Moving Axis

Jakob Maria Buchner

lives and works in Vienna. His series “moving axis”, conceived as a conceptual study, inspired me to a significant entrepreneurial and personal relaunch. When axes shift, the context shifts and a new world emerges. It is simply amazing.

I asked the artist:

What fascinates you about axes?

Axes are like lines – breaking lines and therefore close to drawing, “disegno” delimits the areas, unlike the “sfumato” that makes them run into each other (drawing-painting). For me, “moving axis” is a working term with which I explore the multidimensionality of pictorial ways of thinking in drawing. Drawing for me is more close to thinking – the axes here refer more in a conceptual direction.

What happens when they move?

Especially in this series, the experimental character or the laboratory situation/artificiality is significant to me. The drawings in this series are very similar (especially in terms of composition), and at the same time they have differences. I see the movement in rethinking something very similar again and again, always looking for new upheavals in the picture. A process of drawing and thinking.

What does this do to the viewer?

I see pictures/works of art as offers to the viewer. They invite you to take with you and think further about what you see and feel.
